There’s a saying that any Grand Jury in the country worth its salt could indict a ham sandwich. The theory is that grand juries are tools of the District Attorney, designed to do his/her bidding and rubber stamp whatever they want, just for formality’s sake. Whether that is true or not, that’s the perception. In the 2008 pretendidential election, Barack Obama benefited from a similar perception; that the Democratic party could have elected a ham sandwich.
And, they did.
Unquestionably, Obie is now the Democrats’ stale lunch, stinking up the whole place after smoldering in their lunchbox for a whole year, not counting
the previous months they spent rejecting the obviously more nutritious meat and potatoes in front of them in favor of the McHam Sandwich they gleefully and greedily invented with intent to market. Now that they’re being forced by Fate-as-a-cruel-parent to eat the spoiled porky lunch they had a fit to have, they’re smacking their own fool foreheads, crying and whining and moaning and dreaming about the V-8 they coulda had, and how they coulda been contend-uhs, like a bunch of washed-up, three-year old Marlon Brandos reduced to reprising his glory days in a cheesy vegetable juice commercial. No better for ‘em; they did it to themselves.
Sadly, the bigger problem is they did it to the rest of us, too, with the majority of their party members playing rubber-stamp grand jury to their D.A. Even sadder is that the way they did it was so fucking obvious and simple.
First, play up on the “any Democrat beats Bush” inevitability thing, then, establish Hillary Clinton as the inevitable Democrat, before exploiting the already publicly accepted right-wing meme of Hillary as Dragon Lady. Rile up the country’s latent misogyny and present your guy as not only “not her,” but, a guy to boot. Throw in a little, “I’m black, so voting for me will make you feel good,” and Bob’s your uncle. Voila! You’ve just nominated a ham sandwich, and set him up to win big.
It was really that simple.

But, it was equally inevitable that after trying to ram their processed lunchmeat on a bun creation down the public’s throat, they’d start to gag on it, especially once they realized that since it wasn’t exactly what they thought it promised to be from looking at glossy pictures of it, it didn’t taste very good. That’s the way it always is with fast food. Even when it does taste as good as the picture looks, that’s not really saying much, so, it’s not very satisfying, and you always feel guilty for having eaten it all in the first place.
So, now that McObie’s got a year’s worth of flies and shit buzzing around his head, people are starting to upchuck the portion they’ve already consumed and refusing to buy any more sandwiches like him. From that place. Unfortunately, the only choice they’ve got left is another cheesy ham sandwich just like him from the only other joint in town.
*UPDATE: I’ve found the recipe for the perfect McHama, a ham ‘n’ cheese on a Obama waffle sandwich.

and if that wasn’t bad enough – It’s GREEN HAM & EGGS!
excellent post well put .
Bless you for you sane interpretation of events.
It’s been a bad day today. Such vitriol throughout the blogosphere – every kind of ism and Jihad being tossed around as we were arguing about the best flavor of crackers. The nation is divided for sure, but by what and by whom? And why?
No one even paid attention to the unemployment statistics that were released today. It’s a mad world afterall, it’s a mad world after all, it’s a mad world afterall, it’s a mad, mad world. (apologies to It’s a small world).
Sorry for ranting, but as a lurker, I expect a modicum of sanity, and today is not a good day. Is there a full moon tonight?
Bear with me, HT, I’m ruminating and reflecting today in a potentially futile attempt to avoid making premature, irresponsible commentary. As you are no doubt aware, I prefer making mature, irresponsible, snark-filled commentary.
Cinie, I wasn’t giving you a rough time, you are one of the very few good folks who actually thinks and investigates before giving your opinion. (you are my favorite, but don’t tell the others okay? )
Great clip of a great movie. Where today would you get the like of Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hacket, Jonathon Winters,Spencer Tracey, Ethel Merman, Phil Silvers, Peter Falk, Joe E. Brown, Jim Backus et al in a movie – together – at the same time – working together to put out a great production. I don’t suppose Spencer made 20 million for his contribution, nor did any of the others make 1 million per., even in 1963 dollars. I loved that movie BTW. And it’s actually a good analogy for what is happening today. They were all cutthroat, trying to get the goods, but what good did it do them?
I will await your next post, as usual. I’m just feeling a bit ragged from all the unsourced quotes, and vitriolic comments, particularly about Ft. Hood and that tragedy. It’s debilitating in a way, because one starts to lose hope that people still do not see through the sensational to the real life that most people have to lead.
Unemployment at 10.2% – another 550K+ jobs lost – in one month. I feel like I’m living in Alice’s world, at the teaparty – and a very Unbirthday to you.
Sorry for unloading on you, but you are the one who I know will understand. I’m tired and losing hope, even here in Canuckistan I see our rights being eroded day by day. For the first time, in a very long time, I am afraid.
Yooohoooo, Cinie.
I have a comment in moderation. Let me out?
Sorry, making meatballs and sauce had my full attention for a minute there.
(sounds yummy)
Thanks.
Off-topic, but for anyone interested in Single Payer …
This just arrived in my email:
Speaker Pelosi is keeping her promise to allow the Weiner single-payer amendment full debate and vote on the floor of the House.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote this Friday, November 6, on Rep. Anthony Weiner’s amendment which would replace the House health reform bill with the Single-Payer/Medicare for All bill (HR 676).
Progressive Democrats of America is asking people to call their Representative + 4 other members.

Sliced ham à la Don Martin, anyone?

(Sorry Cinie! I guess!
)
How about some Ham-let? It says it was for an English project. I give it an F-. If you’re going to rewrite Shakespeare, you should at least be able to spell….
Uh…Gary?
No offense…but…I don’t think spelling was the fatal flaw in that…piece?
i said “at least”…
I know.
I was snarking with ya, Bruh.
I’m having lunch today with a dear friend–as in friend from childhood–who’s chugged the whole damn pitcher of Kool-aid.
Pray for me.
Offer to pay, then order for your friend: ham and cheese between two waffles and a glass of KoolAid. They probably won’t have KoolAid, and might balk at the McObie, but, at least you can enjoy your joke.
It’s the little things that get us by.
One thing that sure seems to trump party politics and principles like liberal or conservative, is misogyny. We’ve got Obama pretty much continuing the “conservative” Bush ideas, but now we call it flaming liberalism and socialism. We’ve got Dems trying to pass the Mitt Romney version of mandatory privatized health care insurance, and we’re calling it liberalism. We’ve got Dems fighting to get prayer covered as a legit medical expense while working to ban abortion in the HC bill. We’ve got anti-gay marriage Obama, Defense of Marriage Biden, pro-life Tim Kaine, and birth control banning Harry Reid, saving us from the evil Republicans who hate women.
It is like a rotten ham sandwich.
Whoda thunk 1984 would be sponsored by the Democratic party?
Sometimes a ham sandwich is just that: a ham sandwich.
And, sometimes it’s a pretendident.
Inspired by your post a couple of days ago, Cinie, I looked up Axelrods two companies. That was quite interesting, and I clearly see now where the totally-over-the-top self praise comes from, heh!
But even while admiring the strict consistency of the typography of the Obama Campaign, I often missed the much talked about “Hope”. What I saw was a lot of hate against, dismissal, and ridiculing of the opponents in their campaign!
But of course you could choose to dismiss it with a “Politicians will be politicians” – or is it “Boys will be boys”!? – as many seems to have done!
And as a “Mac person”, I’m disgusted by the Apple commercial you posted. Hadn’t seen that before!
That Apple commercial was the “leaked” opening salvo against Hillary. Camp Ohellno pretended they had no idea who the guy (Phillip De Vellis)that worked for them was who made such a professional-looking video and posted it online.
Re-reading that post makes my head spin all over again!
”Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!”
I’m surprised that Axelrod&Co haven’t gotten themselves more entangled in their own web, than it seems.
Sorry, Pips.
I thought you hadn’t read it since you said you hadn’t seen the 1984 video before.
My bad.
No way!
My bad for not always clicking on all your links … and for having a lousy memory!
What a sad post Cinie. But as always on the mark!
During the primaries I mostly got my news from a blog where one of the – intelligent, prominent – bloggers, who actually preferred Hillary Clinton, still would vote for Obama, as he was “more electable”! And then he added, that when elected they would keep his (Obama’s) feet to the fire!
I never understood how a (I presume) otherwise intelligent person could believe such nonsense! Forget about “afterwards” – as a voter the only power you have, and the only thing politicians seem to care about, is your vote!
Another thing is, that coming from a 7 party (or is it 8 now?) political system, I never quite understood how you could distinguise so clearly between just two parties. You’ve taught me a lot in that respect, Cinie. And I cringe with you now, when you say:
”… people are starting to upchuck the portion they’ve already consumed and refusing to buy any more sandwiches like him. From that place.”!
Cinie, you’re right. However, he said everything and its opposite. He was for the “right” war. Drawing down Iraq troops really meant sending them to Afghanistan. He pretended to be Robert Kennedy on MLK day. He was a “fierce” defender of gay rights and a fierce defender of traditional marriage. He loves Rick Warren and Ronald Reagan. He loved Reagan’s foreign policy. He caters to Michelle, but finds women’s issues a head scratcher. He praises the work of women but sneakily and overtly slimes Hillary.
Even the phrase “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for” is a sense-eradicating statement.
I can see why those eager to believe fell for it. Those of us who do not like narcotics were not duped.
Re the “He caters to Michelle”, Patriotdems I wish I had saved all the comments he’s made about “my wife” while she stood beside him. The latest being what a nice looking catwoman she was at Halloween. I’m sure the collection would show me … something.
Some time ago I made a quick search to counter a claim on another blog, that there were no misogynism from the Obama Campaign during the primaries. What I came up with (leaving out the www. as not to spam the thread with links):
Hillary “crying” vs. strong male:
youtube.com/watch?v=ZgDEI-AbWeU
Annie Oakley mocking:
youtube.com/watch?v=DNjz3WUrdoU
(This has been removed!)
The first 1.44 min. of this one and again from 4.38:
youtube.com/watch?v=uF0b7ZrlsfM&feature=related
“The Wink” ad:
youtube.com/watch?v=_ZtOFiO0R0U
“Making a mistake” and being “punished with a baby”:
youtube.com/watch?v=eNzmly28Bmg&feature=
“I’ll give you a kiss”:
http://tinyurl.com/nlbptf
And this was just from a quick search! How come the “progressives” didn’t (want to?) see this then?
He is overly, almost pathologically conciliatory-at-all-costs, isn’t he?
Almost like the grown-up child of parents who fought and always tried to get the only child to referee.
I’m not seeing or hearing anywhere near the outrage that we should be hearing from the hopeful fools. Nothing near it. Yes, the Republican cons continue to be outraged at having been out-conned, but where is the legitimate pushback from people having democratic values? And I think the vast majority of the democratic politicians do not fall in that group.
As I listened to the infomercials from the likes of NPR and CNN about Obama’s first year in office, I could not help but be struck by how similar it’s been to his year as a senator. All talk, no walk. Present just ain’t good enough.
This is a nightmare, and the people shouting wake up!!!! are the same ones who were shouting in the primaries.
Sorry to be such a cranky person, but Cinie do you really think anyone is waking up?
LPB, ya gotta give ‘em time; they don’t call ‘em “Sheeple” fer nuttin’.
And, I understand the crank, it’s just that the Sheeple are stuck in ennui. They’re awake, they’re just lazy.
On my last vacation (I am sooo ready for another one) I happened to be seated next to a woman on her way to Europe to deliver a speech on global warming. She was a marine biologist from San Diego. I asked for her opinion on the urgency of the issue – I asked if we have time to turn this around before there is a global calamity. Her opinion: yes, there is time. But just barely.
And that’s just one of many issues where we need hard work and good will.
We don’t have time for the Sheeple to be hittin’ the snooze button another couple of whacks.
So I hope you’re right that people are starting to upchuck.
(Actually my first question for the marine biologist was whether it … the climate change problem … was as bad as we read in the news. Her answer was “it’s worse”.) That’s when I asked her if there’s time to turn it around.
LB as you might know, the Danish Climate Minister, and many, many more, has been working hard for years towards the goal of making a binding global agreement on climate in Copenhagen this December. But as has been clear for some time now Obama won’t attend, and therefore the level of ambition has had to be adjusted … downwards!
The “hilarious” thing about this is that while the Summit unveils in Copenhagen without Obama, he himself will be in Oslo receiving the NPP for among other things … working so hard for the climate!
I would laugh if it didn’t hurt so much!
We can only hope that there will be many many protesters distributing little dynamite medallions inscribed with a list of Obama’s fails.
Cinie, I hope to be a little more focused tonight.
I think, for the most part, Obama talked the talk the progressives wanted to hear. He’s enough of a con that it all seemed natural, not forced. The distracting exotic family narrative made people think they really knew him.
After so long in the wilderness they allowed themselves the delusion that the ham sandwich was more than just ninety percent ambitious politician and ten percent ambitious black shill offered as a figurehead that could round up the dissidents in the identity politics rodeo.
What I’m saying (and the sound from real progressives is getting louder) is “can you hear me now?”
PD, I posted the bulk of this over on Wired Left. I don’t really think he ever said what progressives wanted to hear, they turned whatever he said into what they wanted it to be. His “anti war” speech was a call to arms, he supported lobbyists, and, the only time he really sucked up to “progressives was his wishy washy promise to compromise boldly in his ‘05 letter to Kos. If people are now grumbling it’s gotta be because they’re waking up, cuz I don’t think he’s changed at all.
From my comment on Pat’s post at Wired Left:
Pips left this quote from this 1990 piece over at my place a little while ago.
“He’s willing to talk to them (the conservatives) and he has a grasp of where they are coming from, which is something a lot of blacks don’t have and don’t care to have,” said Christine Lee, a second-year law student who is black. “His election was significant at the time, but now it’s meaningless because he’s becoming just like all the others (in the Establishment).”
I’d read and referenced it before, but, it bears remembering that Obama has been propped up by forces on the right since at least Republicans for Obama claim to have formed to draft him to run for president in ‘06, if not long before. Remember, “I’m a Republican and I voted for you,” “thank you, why are we whispering?” Or, all the Republican crossover caucus/primary voters? “Democrat for a Day?” I’ve been suspicious and leery of his intent and hidden backing since Day One.
Oh, and he also pulled the same healthcare crap in Illinois.
THIS is the sh*t that drives me nuts, it is so hard to explain this to those who are besotted in koolaid. I have a sis-in-law (who is oh so liberal, doncha know) who just won’t even entertain any of these facts. I am being paranoid and buying into conspiracy theories, apparently.
I will never forget the first time BO turned me off, and in the beginning I was very open-minded to any dem candidate. His praise of Reagan, OMG Reagan, during an interview.
Money quote:
Senator Barack Obama: “I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not. He put us on a fundamentally different path, because the country was ready for it. I think they felt like with all the excesses of the 1960s and 1970s and government had grown and grown, but there wasn’t much sense of accountability in terms of how it was operating. I think people—he just tapped into what people were already feeling, which was we want clarity, we want optimism, we want a return to that sense of dynamism and entrepreneurship that had been missing.”
Pandering sure, but if he thinks this is even close to what he is doing, he is way off the mark. There is no mark.
That’s just an example of solidarity between union-busting actors, Soup.
(tee hee)
Ronnie Raygun was pretty hammy, too.
“Ham – the Sandwich” will be upset!
lol
I think you mean, “wee-wee’d up.”
