Cinie, I can’t imagine Hillary Clinton expressing herself like that, but I actually don’t object to Sarah Palin saying what she did, speaking about women in politics. Remember this was at a “Forum on Women in Leadership” 6 months prior to Palin even entering the campaign.

What I object to is misquoting. Misquoting Clinton, sucks. Misquoting Palin, sucks. It sucks, sucks, sucks misquoting any woman. It sucks to misquote, period!

And having to go back 16 months to find something (perceived) negative, that Palin said about Clinton sort of sucks too. IMHO.

So I just wanted to set the record straight. I’m a sucker for fairness.
(And if I didn’t happen to think the new smilies suck too, I would have send you a smile here, lol!)

I think you have had more of an impact on this topic, than you realize, Cinie. You stick to your principles, and lay out the facts as you see them. Your visitors know this, and respect you for it. There are a lot of lurkers on the fence about Palin, they are quietly searching for information from both sides. Don't loose heart, Cinie, your work is brilliant.

Just stating my own opinion here, and from now on, gmx17. I'm not likely to change anybody's mind, and frankly, it's far too frustrating, and way too much work, to continue to try. Each to her own.

Cinie, unlike obots, I don't pretend to vote for conservative women because I side with them on the issues. (And FWIW, McPalin is the only "conservative" ticket I've ever voted for.) I'm not going to try to make Palin into something she's not. I'm voting to equalize the gender balance in positions of power. It's my small effort to change the power structure. Having a woman president won't change much if we don't have more women in Congress and in the Senate and in political office at the state level. We're way behind, we need to catch up as quickly as possible and as far as I can tell this is the only option I've got. If serious liberal candidates appear on the horizon then they will most likely get my vote, but I don't see that happening any time soon. (And I don't see a woman president happening anytime soon either. Hey, I'm a realist.)

Personally, I'd like to see diversity in power beyond gender. I'd like to see more people of color, LGBT, heck even an atheist or two, in positions of power and a lot less straight (and/or closeted) Christian white guys; and I believe that my viewpoint doesn't necessarily reflect a bias but just a desire to move on. Enough already. If the human race is going to advance we need to move outside the narrow power perspective we are currently confined to. And if we manage that, then IMO some little part of the liberal agenda will be realized. I'm willing to take my table scraps and be (somewhat) happy with them. As Sartre said of the Nazi occupation of France, "We were never so free." Perhaps I paraphrase (I'm too lazy to look it up), but right now I'm feeling really free.

gxm17, I honestly don't understand your position. I didn't like it when that kind of logic made black people, and those desperate to appear unprejudiced, vote for Obama's brown skin and ignore his lack of record, and I don't like the push to vote for Palin's vagina. I've been researching her and, even if I was inclined to consider such a thing, from what I can see, there's just no there there. And, what is there is on the other side of my street. I'm sorry, I just cannot go there.

I understand your point and you make it well, but for me, as a liberal and a feminist, I feel that the best I can do in the current political climate is support women candidates regardless of affiliation. If liberalism and liberal candidates return to the political arena then my position may change. Right now the only avenue available to me is voting as a Gynocrat and, honestly, my vote for McPalin was one of the most satisfying votes I've made in years. (Voting for John Kerry, Tim Kaine and Jim Webb was a tedious and unenjoyable process. And I'm still angry at myself for supporting Kaine.)

Sarah Palin excites me. Cynthia McKinney excites me. The two women couldn't be more different but I admire and respect them both. When I support women candidates I feel I'm accomplishing something. Maybe I'm not but we won't know until women are fully represented in political office… and we have a long way to go.

Sotomayor seems more than qualified, the more I hear her testimony. The President gets to pick his nominees, unless the nominee isn't competent, the nominee should get confirmed. Sotomayor isn't incompetent, she certainly isn't a Harriet Myers type. My husband and I were listening to the criticism on Fox News, and I have to say it does them no good, it all sounds contrived and exaggerated. Full disclosure my husband is of Spanish descent, born in Madrid, Spain, an American born abroad. So we don't have any phobias toward Hispanics. We are also both Independents.

Why would the Republicans want to appear as though they are bullying a qualified nominee? That doesn't make any good political sense.

Let's change one word and imagine Hillary said this about Sarah:

<blockquote>"I say this with all due respect to Sarah Palin and to her experience and to her passion for changing the status quo also, but when I hear a statement like that, coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived <b>surrender</b> about that excess criticism or – you know maybe a sharper microscope put on her – I think, damn, that … that doesn’t do us any good, women in politics, women in general, wanting to progress this country."</blockquote>

Still sucks, huh?
