When it comes to Barack’s Bailout Bonanza Brouhaha, everybody responsible for the current “outrage” about the debacle is lying their head off through their perfectly capped teeth. Case in point, The Dodd Amendment supposedly “snuck” into the stimulus bill that allegedly restricted the bonuses to be paid executives employed by companies receiving government handouts. First, the amendment was there, then it wasn’t. Dodd said he didn’t change it, then he said he did. The exact sequence of events seems deliberately fuzzy. What, exactly did Dodd do, and when did he do it?
By February 4, Obama had angrily shaken his finger at “shameful” Wall Street executive excess and had issued new rules regarding their future compensation that even he, via MSNBO, admitted were “symbolic.”
The limits would not apply retroactively to any bank that received money from the first half of the $700 bailout allocated by Congress. For example, the restriction would not apply to such firms as American International Group Inc., Bank of America Corp., and Citigroup Inc., that already have received such help.
But Obama touted the broad symbolism of his action.
February 10, the International Herald Tribune noted that the toothless language was all Geithner’s:
The Obama administration’s new plan to bail out the nation’s banks was fashioned after a spirited internal debate that pitted the Treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner, against some of the president’s top political hands.
In the end, Geithner largely prevailed in opposing tougher conditions on financial institutions that were sought by presidential aides, including David Axelrod, a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, according to administration and congressional officials.
Geithner, who was to announce the broad outlines of the plan on Tuesday, successfully pushed back against more severe limits on executive pay for companies receiving government aid. He resisted those who pushed to dictate how banks will spend their rescue money.
On February 14, the Wall Street Journal reported that Christopher Dodd had inserted retroactive limits on bonuses into the stimulus bill that the Obministration opposed. They also reported that Dodd was pressured by Treasury Secretary, Turbo Tax Timmy Geithner, tax cheat (TTTG,tc) and Lawrence Summers:
The administration is concerned the rules will prompt a wave of banks to return the government’s money and forgo future assistance, undermining the aid program’s effectiveness. Both Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Lawrence Summers, who heads the National Economic Council, had called Sen. Dodd and asked him to reconsider, these people said.
However, it seems that the language allowing bonuses to be paid to people with existing contracts was always included:
The bill carves out an exception for those whose employment contracts require payment of an annual bonus. Some top finance-industry executives don’t have contracts; the language in others’ agreements may or may not exempt them from the restrictions.
Politico’s report of Dodd’s amendment is even more detailed, and again points to Geithner as the driving force behind opposition to strict limitations on executive bonuses. Their report also makes clear that Dodd’s rules exempted contracts existing before February 11:
Additionally, the rules in the stimulus bill apply not only to companies that receive bailout funds in the future, but also to those that have received TARP money in the past – although executive bonuses doled out in contracts signed before February 11 would not be impacted.
So, nobody “snuck” anything anywhere; the President and his Boy Wonder have always been about protecting the banksters while appearing to sympathize with their victims, and when Dodd says the language in the stimulus bill was the result of lobbying from the Treasury Department, it seems he’s the only one who’s not lying. Yet, in today’s coverage of Dodd’s apparent “No I didn’t, yes, I did,” tap dancing, Politico makes no effort to clear things up, instead taking the “he told CNN he didn’t, right before he told them he did” easy way out, only adding to the confusion, and shifting the blame away from TTTG,tc, where it obviously belongs.
Additionally, the stimulus bill provision allegedly proposed by Senators Ron Wyden, Democrat, and Republican Olympia Snowe, to tax executive bonuses at 35% was also killed by the Obministration, namely Geithner and Summers. The two Senators seem reluctant to include the head honcho in their blame game, though, if Fox News is quoting Wyden correctly:
“I think the administration, at best, is sending mixed messages,” he said. “You have the president being very forthright and very blunt…My sense is that the economic team has not followed up.”
Obama owns his mom’s boss‘ “uniquely qualified” kid, has foisted him upon the American public, and continues to back him unequivocally. Any, and all, confusion surrounding the bailout bonus issue is the result of Obama’s purposeful rabble rousing and misdirection, plain old-fashioned Obama ass kissing, and sloppy media “Obamessiah can do no wrong” cheerleading disguised as journalism. Even the allegation that Dodd was deliberately trying to protect AIG because of his relationship to the company loses steam when the fact that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and others have been screwing the loophole, too, is considered. Remember, Obama wants you mad, otherwise, you might balk at his “ambitious” budget plans to change capitalism and enact fundamental, foundational change.
AFVET,
Thank you as well! You actually served before I did (80’s) but around the same time as my husband who retired after 22 years. I’ve not used any VA benefits either (aside from the eligibility to purchase a home) and neither has my husband. While he does get his retirement pension for life (hardly comparable to what politicians get), those full medical benefits for family for life were also a part of the contract. But that changed. Now after retirement, he is entitled to medical care at a reduced rate (TriCare), but still has to pay for them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful we can at least afford it. I was just making the point that they changed the benefit structure for those who are actually putting themselves out there while the politicians, who are not, ensured their benefits remained intact.
[...] and finger pointing about who told who to put what where, when the entire sequence of events was documented in the press at the time, has a purpose other than to “get to the bottom of things.” [...]
Cinnie…I’m with willysimmons on that En Vogue clip, I hit play and my head just started bobbin’ of it’s own volition! Thanks for that.
Great post gir-r-r-rl! I just said in my post yesterday, “I don’t know who it is, but somebody’s lying about all of this.” You’re right, every damn one of ‘em is lying through their teeth – and none of them are good at it.
As much as I despise Shrub & Co, at least their lies didn’t unravel for 8 years! The Changeling hasn’t even made 100 days yet he and the gang that couldn’t shoot straight are embroiled! Can this get any richer??!! My Grandmama always said, “Whatever you do in the dark, will come to light.” Our first African-American president seemed to have missed that tidbit of Black truism as he perpetrated his 25-year fraud at Trinity.
The real story will be what comes of all of this. I don’t expect the MSM to tell it, however – too much of a vested interest in making his ass look good!
AFVET…I agree with you. This is all about him getting his megalomania stroked. When it gets hot in the kitchen, he bails (no pun intended)! Jay-fu%kin’-Leno?? Give me a damn break! Maybe he should have tried out for an NBA team or somethin’, at least, as I’ve heard, he does have some skills in that regard. But as Oscar Wilde said, “Ambition is the last refuge of failure.”
You said:
“The politicians get their pensions for the rest of their life, also, full medical benefits for their families, all paid for by US, and believe me it is better than you can afford, no limits on coverage forever.”
Not sure when you joined, but my husband and I are both NavyVets. I remember when that promise of full medical benefits forever used to be made to military member for them and their families in exchange for honorable service to the country. No more. Though it is cheaper than the civilian world, we have to pay too now. But politicians who sit on their asses in Congress and wield unrestrained, corrupted power? Free for life. Go figure.
And I won’t sit here and bash all of Acorn because I know there are some affliates who do good work – particularly in NOLA where I volunteered. That being said however, those who were complicit in Obama’s crooked selection need to hang up their community-organizing sneakers and get some damn dignity.
Deb, I served our country from 69 to 73.
I haven’t had to use any VA benefits yet but it would be nice to know if they still exist if I need them.
Thank you, and your husband, for your service.
We can always take to our graves the fact that we helped keep the American People secure.
Now Obama has signed up ACORN for census taking.
Let’s see, 300 million people in the country times 5 = no wait, let’s recount that,… what party,…? okay, we can fix that.
Very scary….
This administration makes the Keystone Cops look like a crime drama.
How can you tell when a politician is lying ???
Their lips are moving ………
and I have to agree with AFVET… bo now has his yes men / women and rubber stampers in place…… all we can hope for is getting some of them out of office
I just heard the Obama’s comments in California comparing the model T to today’s auto’s. unreal.
If his comments do not convince you that he is being manipulated by puppet-masters, then he is the stupidest president we have ever had, or he is clinically insane.
Common sense shall prevail here, but it might take some time.
I need to add something to the above comment.
The politicians get their pensions for the rest of their life, also, full medical benefits for their families, all paid for by US, and believe me it is better than you can afford, no limits on coverage forever.
They continue to prey on the ignorance of the American People, that are entertained by the liberal media, and more or less incoherent as far as being aware of what’s going on around them.
All we can do is to pray for some intelligence before the next election.
Is that too much to ask ??
In haste. I read that IHT article in Feb (well, I read it at the NYT site) and thought it clearly a set up for Geithner as a bad guy and Axelrod (!) as a good guy. Very puffy, all anon sources from inside the Obama camp.
Geithner, whatever his faults, is an ally of Hillary. They were planning to work together on the international economy crisis. (Hillary to tell Geithner what the US policy should be.)
In Feb Axelrod sets up Geithner as a bad guy … now they use him as a scapegoat.
Typical Obama tactic: Obama’s fat cat friends get the money, Hillary’s friends get the blame.
BO is a narcissistic self adulating puppet who flies to California to talk to 20-somethings that cheer his name to boost his ego.
He wouldn’t ever attempt to speak to a conservative audience.
If he did, the news coverage would be minimal, and he would be slaughtered by the questions; and his inability to form an intelligent response would devastate his ego. So why do that?
Instead, he hides behind his telepromter, smiles, lies, misdirects the populace and happily cranks up AIR FORCE 1 and flies back to his secure homestead called the White House that we pay for.
Why is he farting around with basketball when the American economy is in the tank? HE DOESN’T CARE !!!! Wake up !!!
This whole government is scamming the American people on a systematic basis because there is going to be another shoe to drop.
They demonize wall street, while they tax them to the max.
The government gets a cost of living every year, in January, unless they vote it down.
Their (gov) pensions are not invested in the stock market, but guaranteed by the US government to pay them their salaries for the rest of their life.
If they were made to live under the private sector rules I guarantee you would see a completely different attitude toward the economy.
Cinie…thanks for the site.
Cinie

Thank you! I did remember reading at the time about Geitner prevailing in taking off checks and balances from the bill. And now they all pretend they didn’t know about the bonuses!
After Geitner had been intimately involved in the September AIG bailout, we’re supposed to believe he’s a babe in the woods…
