It seems PUMAs are not the only “party unity my ass” advocates. In fact, that should be the motto of the Republicrats, the new party of “O.” Jack Cafferty’s question of the day is “how can the GOP help pres-elect Obama,” based on Newt Gingrich’s leter to the Republican National Convention condemning it’s Blagobama ads:
I was saddened to learn that at a time of national trial, when a president-elect is preparing to take office in the midst of the worst financial crisis in over seventy years, that the Republican National Committee is engaged in the sort of negative, attack politics that the voters rejected in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles.
Gingrich, who predicted Obama would win Iowa in the primaries, and who once called Obie a Kennedy-esque phenomenon, joins Sen. John McCain in calling for cross-party support of McCain’s former rival. Obama, who has ticked off many so-called “progressives with his cabinet picks, has always enjoyed a cozy relationship with the GOP; Republicans for Obama claims to be a grassroots organization who “encouraged” Obama to run for president, he promoted “Democrat for a Day,” most notably in Pennsylvania, to get Republicans and Independents to temporarily switch party affiliation in order to vote for him in the primaries, and owes his election, in part, to Republican “Obamacan” crossover, especially during the primaries and caucuses, and anti-McCain depressed general election turnout.
Colin Powell, not only endorsed Obama, he also had some not-so-nice things to say about his nominal party. However, it may be that Obama’s GOP buddies-to-be might soon have to take their positions under the bus, too; despite repeated promises to appoint Republicans to his “bi-partisan” cabinet, so far, there’s only been one, Robet Gates’ holdover.
Obviously the “day” part of “Democrat for a Day” meant more to Obama than his Obamacans knew. Just as obviously, some of them have added “dreaming” to the word. Then again, George Bush is going out of his way to hook his homeboy up.
UPDATE: According to the Boston Globe, the Republican record of one cabinet member will hold, though Obama is scheduled to name Illinois Republican, Rep. Ray LaHood Secretary of Transportation. Seems Robert Gates is registered Independent. Ah, could the Combine finally be going Washington?
