Take This For What It’s Worth To You

In Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Politics on October 30, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Over on RedState (yeah, yeah, I know) they have a post up from someone going by the name Anonymous_14 who claims to be a former Clinton staffer, now a researcher for the Obama campaign.  Supposedly, her/his conscious is getting the better of him/her, and he/she must come clean and purge her/his soul.  You get the idea.  Anyway, here’s the story; like I said, take it for what it’s worth:

After a long and careful consideration of all the implications and possible consequences of my actions today, I have decided to go through with this in the hope that our country can indeed be guided into the right direction. First, a little personal background… I am a female grad student in my 20’s, and a registered Democrat. During the primaries, I was a campaign worker for the Clinton candidacy. I believed in her and still do, staying all the way to the bitter end. And believe me, it was bitter. The snippets you’ve heard from various media outlets only grazed the surface. There was no love between the Clinton and Obama campaigns, and these feelings extended all the way to the top. Hillary was no dope though, and knew that any endorsement of Obama must appear to be a full-fledged one. She did this out of political survival. As a part of his overall effort to extend an olive branch to the Clinton camp and her supporters, Obama took on a few Hillary staff members into his campaign. I was one such worker. Though I was still bitterly loyal to Hillary, I still held out hope that he would choose her as VP. In fact, there was a consensus among us transplants that in the end, he HAD to choose her. It was the only logical choice. I also was committed to the Democratic cause and without much of a second thought, transferred my allegiance to Senator Obama.

I’m going to let you in on a few secrets here, and this is not because I enjoy the gossip or the attention directed my way. I’m doing this because I doubt much of you know the true weaknesses of Obama. Another reason for my doing this is that I am lost faith in this campaign, and feel that this choice has been forced on many people in this country. Put simply, you are being manipulated. That was and is our job – to manipulate you (the electorate) and the media (we already had them months ago). Our goal is to create chaos with the other side, not hope. I’ve come to the realization (as the campaign already has) that if this comes to the issues, Barack Obama doesn’t have a chance. His only chance is to foster disorganization, chaos, despair, and a sense of inevitability among the Republicans. It has worked up until now. Joe the Plumber has put the focus on the issues again, and this scares us more than anything. Being in a position to know these things, I will rate what the Obama campaign already knows are their weak links from the most important on down.

1 – Hillary voters. Internal polling suggests that at best, we are taking 70-75% of these voters. Other estimates are as low as 60% in some areas – particularly Ohio and western PA. My biggest problem with this campaign’s strategy was the decision NOT to offer Hillary the VP slot. She was ready and able to take this on, and would have campaigned enthusiastically for it. This selection would have also brought virtually all of her supporters into the fold, and the Obama campaign knew it. Though I have no way of knowing this for certain, and I do admit that I am relying on internal gossip, Senator Obama actually went against the advice of his top advisors. They wanted him to choose her, but the only significant opposition to this within the campaign came from Barack and Michelle Obama. In short, he let personal feelings take precedence over what was the most logical thing to do. Biden, by the way, has been a disaster inside the campaign. Everyone cringes whenever he gives an interview, and he creates so many headaches as the campaign has to stay on their toes in order to disseminate information and spin whatever it was he was trying to say.

2 – Sarah Palin. Don’t believe what the media is telling you about how horrible a choice she was. Again, our internal polling suggest that though she has had a minimal impact on pulling disaffected Hillary Democrats to McCain, she has done wonders in mobilizing the base for McCain. Another thing – we were completely taken by surprise with her pick. In my capacity in the research department, I looked into the backgrounds of Leiberman, Romney, Pawlenty and Ridge, and prepared briefs. I don’t mind bragging that we had pretty good stuff on all of them. With Leiberman, the plan was to paint him as an erratic old-timer who didn’t have a clue as to what he was doing (pretty much a clone of McCain). In Romney, we had him pegged as an evil capitalist who cut jobs. Pawlenty was going to get the “Quayle treatment”, or more precisely: a pretty face, with no valid experience. Tom Ridge was going to be used to provide a direct link from McCain to Bush. As you can see, we were quite enamored of all of them. Then the unexpected happened – Sarah Palin. We had no clue as to how to handle her, and bungled it from the start. Though through our misinformation networks, we have successfully taken some of the shine off. But let there be no doubt. She remains a major obstacle. She has singlehanded solidified “soft” Republican support, mobilized the McCain ground game, and has even had some appeal to independents and Hillary voters. This is what our internal polling confirms.

3 – Obama’s radical connections. Standards operating procedure has been to cry “racism” whenever one of these has been brought up. We even have a detailed strategy ready to go should McCain ever bring Rev. Wright up. Though by themselves they are of minimal worth, taken together, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Father Pfelger, and now, Rashid Khalili, are exactly what the campaign does not need. The more focus on them, the more this election becomes a referendum on Obama. The campaign strategy from the very beginning was to make this election a referendum on Bush. Strategists have been banging their head on how successfully McCain has distanced himself from Bush. This has worked, and right now the tide is in his favor. People are taking a new look at Barack Obama, and our experience when this happens tells us this is not good news at all. When they take a look at him, one or more of these names are bound to be brought up. McCain has wisely not harped on this in recent weeks and let voters decide for themselves. This was a trap we set for him, and he never fully took the bait. Senator Obama openly dared him to bring up Ayers. This was not due to machismo on the part of Obama, but actually due to campaign strategy. Though McCain’s reference to Ayers fell flat in the last debate, people in the Obama campaign were actually disappointed that he didn’t follow through on it more and getting into it. Our focus groups found this out: When McCain brings these connections up, voters are turned off to him. They’d rather take this into consideration themselves, and when this happens, our numbers begin to tank.

4 – The Bradley Effect. Don’t believe these polls for a second. I just went over our numbers and found that we have next to no chance in the following states: Missouri, Indiana, North Carolina, Florida, New Hampshire and Nevada. Ohio leans heavily to McCain, but is too close to call it for him. Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Mexico and Iowa are the true “toss up states”. The only two of these the campaign feels “confident” in are Iowa and New Mexico. The reason for such polling discrepancy is the Bradley Effect, and this is a subject of much discussion in the campaign. In general, we tend to take a -10 point percentage in allowing for this, and are not comfortable until the polls give us a spread well over this mark. This is why we are still campaigning in Virginia and Pennsylvania! This is why Ohio is such a desperate hope for us! What truly bothers this campaign is the fact that some pollsters get up to an 80% “refuse to respond” result. You can’t possibly include these into the polls. The truth is, people are afraid to let people know who they are voting for. The vast majority of these respondents are McCain supporters. Obama is the “hip” choice, and we all know it.

As part of my research duties, I scour right wing blogs and websites to get somewhat of a “feel” as to what is being talked about on the other side. Much of it is nonsense, but there are some exceptions which give the campaign jitters. A spirited campaign has been made to infiltrate many pro-Hillary sites and discredit them. A more disorganized, but genuine effort has also been made to sow doubts among the unapologetically right wing sites such as redstate.com. Don’t you guys get it? This has been the Obama campaign’s sole strategy from the very beginning! The only way he wins is over a dispirited, disorganized, and demobilized opposition. This is how it has been for all of his campaigns. What surprises me is that everyone has fallen for it. You may point to the polls as proof of the inevitability of all of this. If so, you have fallen for the oldest trick in the book. How did we skew these polls, you might ask? It all starts with the media “buzz” which has been generated over the campaign. Many stories are generated on the powerful Obama ground game, and how many new voters were registered. None of this happens by coincidence. It is all part of the poll-skewing process. This makes pollsters change their mixes to reflect these new voters and tilt the mix more towards Democratic voters. What is not mentioned or reported on is not the “under-reported cell phone users or young voters” we hear so much about. What is underreported is you.

I changed my somewhat positive opinion of this campaign during the unfair and sexist campaign against Sarah Palin. I will never agree with her on the issues and will probably never vote for her, but I am embarrassed of what has happened. I can’t ignore our own hand in all of this. What I do know is that I will not be voting for Obama this time around. Treat that as you will.

Not exactly earth-shattering information since we all know this stuff to be true already, that’s why we’re PUMAs.  So, even if this is some kind of reverse psychology “astrofucking,” it’s unlikely to change anybody’s mind or resolve.

Blogger Bullies All A-Twitter Over GOP Hillary Mailer

In Hillary Clinton, Politics on October 30, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Well, they never!  HuffPo, Kos, and TPM are sporting twisted knickers and are sp…sp…spittin’ mad at a GOP mailer featuring Hillary Clinton in a McCain/Palin lovefest, designed to appeal to disaffected HRC supporters in Pennsylvania.  Though a Clinton spokesperson denounced the ad, it’s safe to say that those to whom the ad is targeted, might have very comfortable, untwisted knickers, and absolutely no trouble swallowing.

Responds Hillary spokesperson Kathleen Strand: “It is safe to say Hillary Clinton does not approve this message. She made history earning 18 million votes and has urged everyone who supported her to vote for Barack Obama because they have so much more in common with him than they do with Senator McCain. Voters should not be distracted by last minute, desperate attempts that claim otherwise.”

Nothing last minute about it, Katie.  From where I sit, this looks like a very smart, not-desperate-at-all move.

It’a a Chicago Thang

In Barack Obama, Politics on October 30, 2008 at 7:55 pm

First, Team O moved the day-to-day operations of the DeaNC to their home turf in Chicago, now, he’s filling his yet-to-be-assembled cabinet with homeboys.  According to “sources unauthorized to say shit they’re going to say anyway,” Barack Obama is planning to reward Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D.-Ill) for services rendered by making him White House Chief of Staff, says Politico:

All sides deny, but AP has the buzz:

Barack Obama’s campaign has approached Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel about possibly serving as White House chief of staff, officials said Thursday, looking ahead as the marathon presidential race entered its final, frenzied stretch with a Democratic tilt.

The Democrats who described the contact with Emanuel spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to be quoted by name.

Think Politico and AP’s own personal Deep Throat would back down just because some Democratic scrub said the original AP story was “way too forward?”  Nope.  Politico says, “it’s in the news, so we believe it:”

But there’s little question–and press reports already –of potential interest in Emanuel.

For their part, AP says, “yeah, they said it wasn’t true, but we don’t believe ‘em:”

The Democrats who described the Obama campaign’s approach to Emanuel spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to be quoted by name. An aide to the congressman, Sarah Feinberg, said in an e-mail that he “has not been contacted to take a job in an administration that does not yet exist. Everyone is focused on Election Day, as they should be.”

Asked about Emanuel after touching down in Colombia, Mo., on Thursday night, Obama said only: “I’m trying to win an election.” Then, referring to campaign manager David Plouffe, he said: “Plouffe is my chief of staff.”

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton earlier had said: “There’s no news because there’s no job to offer.”

The article then goes on forever as if no denial had been issued.  I guess when it comes to the truth, the news media doesn’t believe Obama any more than the rest of us do.

Speaking of denials, in another AP account, and on a completely unrelated topic, Michael Jackson is denying reports that he and his brothers are reuniting.

“My brothers and sisters have my full love and support, and we’ve certainly shared many great experiences, but at this time I have no plans to record or tour with them,” the self-proclaimed “king of pop” said a statement.

Thank God!  Who wants to see 50 – 60 year old men hopping around in loud clothes and Afro wigs singing “I Want You Back?”  Whether you do or not though, Jermaine says they’re going through with it, Michael, too, no matter what he says:

“It is going to be more like a family affair,” he was quoted as saying by the Australian Associated Press. “(Younger sister) Janet’s going to open and, of course, the original Jackson 5 … Michael, Randy and the whole family. … We’re in the studio, we’re planning on being out there next year.”

Anybody else noticing a pattern here?  I mean besides the fact that the Jacksons are originally from the Chicago area, too?  Seems you can get somebody to say anything you want them to and the media will report it.  Then you can deny it, but, if the media doesn’t believe you, or doesn’t like what you said, or just doesn’t give a shit, they’ll keep reporting it until the truth comes out and they have to stop.  Boy, what a great gig!  Once you eliminate legwork and fact checking, that journalism thing is a cinch.

“Blackie O?” That’s Racist

In Barack Obama, Politics on October 30, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Some obviously visually impaired, or possibly extremely over-caffeinated, or otherwise unrealistically  imaginative, and/or artificially stimulated people have put forth the notion that Michelle Obama is somehow reminiscent of Jacqueline Kennedy.  However, I cannot imagine surviving the ingestion of a sufficient amount of hallucinogenics required to seriously entertain such a thought.  Jackie O?  Why not Mamie EisenhowerRosalynn Carter?  I can get there from here, but Jackie Kennedy, uh uh.

Now, according to New York Magazine, Phillip Bloch and Forrest Whitaker’s wife (huh?) have decided that not only is Michelle Obama Jackie Kennedy reincarnated, “Blackie O” is an appropriate appellation.

He does have some suggestions for Michelle Obama: He’s thinking Carolina Herrera or Oscar de la Renta. “Michelle, call me!” he yelled into our tape recorder. “I will hook you up, girl. I will not charge.” He’s even got a slightly off-color nickname for his First Lady pick. “Forrest Whitaker’s wife and I always joke about this,” he said. “We were at the convention and I said, ‘Oh, girl, you’re looking like Jackie O!’ And she said, ‘Hell no, baby, I’m looking like Blackie O.’ When I say this, I don’t want this to come out as I’m making a derogatory remark, but Blackie O: in the White House!’”

Bloch also defended Sarah Palin against the media’s unfair Wardrobe-gate attacks:

“Image is everything,” he opined at the Central Park Conservancy’s Halloween Ball at the park’s Naumburg Bandshell last night. “To give her a hard time about spending $150,000 on the wardrobe — she didn’t make up the prices, she didn’t hire a big stylist and say get me the most expensive things.” Although he approves of her look — “chic and elegant; age appropriate” — he said he wasn’t sure the RNC absolutely had to blow that much money on it. “Her stylist should’ve asked for a discount,” he said. “If she were working with me, I would’ve gotten her a discount.”

Yeah, Phil, and coupled with your (I assume) standard no-charge offer, Sarah probably could have come in way under a hundred and fifty grand with you as her stylist.  Then again, maybe SP should call Star Jones for “how to get free stuff”  tips.

In other news, protesters did what protesters do, that is, protested the L.A. Times today, demanding the release of tapes showing Michelle and Barack Obama at a dinner honoring Rashid Khalidi.  For all the good it apparently did.

None.

Chris Matthews Leg Is Wet

In Barack Obama, Politics on October 30, 2008 at 10:10 am

Okay, we all know Chris Matthews has a…”thing” about Barack Obama, right?  As far back as January he was gushing about how “attractive” Obama is:

“I did think he looked incredibly attractive up there with his wife, his beautiful wife, Michelle. Again — they are one hell of an attractive couple up there. When they took the stage there it reminded me a bit of Jack Kennedy and Jackie back in ‘56. … There’s something nice about it.”

Jack and Jackie Kennedy?  Was Matthews on acid in the 60’s?  You’ve got to be looking at history through a seriously distorted lens to get a Kennedy-esque vibe from the Obamas.  Then, there’s the famous “tingly leg” comment Matthews should rightly never live down:

I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often. No, seriously. It’s a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country. And that is an objective assessment.

“Objective?”  C’mon, Chris.  The saddest part of that statement, though, is Matthews’ assertion that he doesn’t get that feeling too often.  Wonder what his wife thinks about that?  I also wonder what was happening to Chris’ leg when he said this:

I thought it was Hollywood. It was romance. It was realism. The technical quality of it, the production values were perfect, the way they timed going to live, the biographical material. But most important, the connection with the average person in the economic turmoil we face right now I thought was fabulous. Of course, there we see the setting, which is very much like an Oval Office setting, showing that he’s comfortable and we should be comfortable and will be with him in such a setting. I thought everything was just right.

Ah, romance!

Sarah Palin Cut Loose

In Barack Obama, Politics on October 30, 2008 at 1:51 am

Oh, man, the self-writing jokes just keep coming.  The highly offensive West Hollywood Halloween effigy of Sarah Palin has thankfully been removed.  That’s not the funny part.  The funny part is why.  Seems it had something to do with the Secret Service, enterprising neighbors, the mayor, and an effigy of the “artwork’s” creator that did it.  Here’s the AP story as reported by BayNews9:

Amid a growing frenzy of protesters and media surrounding his home, Chad Morrisette decided his noosed Sarah Palin mannequin should be cut loose.

He and his partner had created the effigy of the GOP vice presidential hopeful three weeks ago and vowed to keep it outside their home until Halloween, despite widespread criticism from neighbors and local officials. On Wednesday the mayor convinced Morrisette the mannequin should come down.

“I explained to them that this could be dangerous to you and your neighbors,” said Mayor Jeff Prang, noting that he received hundreds of venomous e-mails from people offended by the display. “They were totally unprepared for this kind of international attention, for the amount of impact on their home and their neighborhood.”

Besides a constant flow of angry callers, the homeowners had received a visit from the Secret Service and criticism from a Los Angeles County supervisor who ordered an investigation into whether the effigy constitutes a hate crime.

Then, on Wednesday, neighbors covered up the Palin mannequin with sheets, and more protesters showed up later in the day accompanied by a man driving a vehicle adorned with an effigy labeled “Chad,” with a noose around its neck, said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.

“This evening, it wasn’t as friendly,” he said.

Prang said he drove by after work and saw protesters and media around the home with helicopters overhead. Morrisette saw the mayor and waved him inside for a talk.

Afterward, the mannequin came down, but Morrisette kept the rest of his Halloween decor intact, including a display of Palin’s running mate, John McCain, popping out of a flaming chimney.

Poor Johhny Mac.  At least Sarah got cut loose.  And just so you know, an effigy of Barack Obama found hanging on the University of Kentucky campus was immediately cut down by police, and, as far as I know, no photos were taken.  Fair’s fair, right?

One Vote?

Gee, I Missed Obama’s “Amber Waves Of Bull” Ad

In Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Politics on October 30, 2008 at 12:20 am

Golly gee whiz, darn it to heck, I was so busy thinking about watching my imaginary friend play Tic Tac Toe with her imaginary friend, I forgot all about watching Barack Obama’s “Not Ready For Primetime But I’m Going For It Anyway” three million dollar mega-media extravaganza.  Majorly bummed, I immediately went looking for reviews of this epic, once-in-a-lifetime event.  The L.A. Times seems to say I didn’t miss much.  What do they know, though?  They won’t even release the tapes they have of him, so I couldn’t watch that instead. Plus, they’re on their, what, fortieth round of layoffs?

Chances are, tonight’s 30-minute Barack Obama infomercial will have minimal effect on the final outcome of the 2008 presidential election.

Those leaning against the freshman Illinois senator were unlikely to be swayed by it (or even watch it).

Well, at least they got that right.  They also said Obama didn’t even mention John McCain or Hillary Clinton.

As befits a front-runner’s status, Obama saw no reason to spend any time during the half-hour directly attacking John McCain. Indeed, the Republican’s name was never uttered.

We were struck by another omission. Several prominent Democrats had cameos in the ad — Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, among them. Conspicuously absent (at least to us) — Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York.

“Me, me, me,” huh?  What else is new?  Well, I guess he’s entitled, since he’s paying for itMichelle Malkin anticipated the text of Obama’s “Greatest Show On Earth” before live-blogging it:

Higher purpose…blahblahblah…Change We Need…blahblahblah…Every American must play a role…Take care of one another…blahblahblah…

Just doing a little pre-liveblogging of the Obama-mercial, which begins in just a few minutes.

Say what you will about Ms. Malkin, it takes guts to sit through thirty minutes of Obama self-love to validate  your pre-conceived notions about him.  Me, I just spent the time contemplating belly lint.  AP-Yahoo News, though, says I could have had a rollicking good time dizzying myself from all the spin, but I thought, and still think, that examining my cuticles for fungus was a lot more fun.
