Maybe Obama Just Sucks

While outlet after outlet of the mainstream and not-so-mainstream media tell me over and over that Sarah Palin is a doomed Republican desperation gimmick of a pick because of her “lack of experience,” her “flip-flops,” and “lies,” a similar number of similar outlets are telling me that her political evil twin, Barack Obama, whose “experience,” “flip-flops” and “lies” are just as questionable, is only doomed because he’s black.

Huh?

Let’s get one thing straight.  Barack Obama is no blacker now than he was when he started this race.  There has been no humongous influx of foreign born, white supremicists, naturalized as citizens just in time to thwart Obama’s presidential plans.  As far as we know, there is no data that supports the theory that formerly liberal non racists have suddenly become bigots in such large numbers as to have a negative impact on the outcome of this election.  No one has suggested that a surprising number of racists reproduced a bumper crop of chip-off-the-old-block offspring nearly eighteen years ago, who are now on the brink of voting age eligibility.

So, what gives?  Why all the sudden interest in exploring America’s latent racism, especially in the last few days, approximately since the time Obi-Wan-NaBePresident’s poll numbers reached bottom?  AP-Yahoo News, in conjunction with Stanford University (a big Obama contributor, along with the University of California, Harvard University and University of Chicago) has a new poll showing that of the white people who don’t like black people, most of them won’t vote for Obama.  The poll also showed that a lot of people think he just plain sucks.

Race is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama. Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates. More than a quarter of all Democrats expressed doubt that Obama can bring about the change they want, and they are likely to vote against him because of that.

Of course, that info doesn’t lead the story, no way.  It’s tucked in the middle, surrounded by all sorts of damning statistics showing that bigoted Democrats, especially those bitter, backwoods Clinton supporters, are not falling in line behind the black guy.  There’s also a nifty little interactive thingy where you can see the results in black and white, complete with illustrated stick people.

Here’s the thing, though, the poll attempts to show that Barack Obama’s troubles with Democrats are racially motivated.  But that’s like taking your temperature when you stub your toe.  What’s the point?  More than half of the Democrats who voted in the primaries decided Barack Obama sucked, and didn’t vote for him.  A lot of those people were white.  A lot of those people seem to have not yet been convinced that he has suddenly stopped sucking.  A lot of the people who voted for Obama were black.  They seem not to care so much whether he sucks or not.  A lot of people who voted for Obama in the primaries were Republicans and Independents encouraged to cast a one-time Democratic vote against Hillary Clinton.  They always thought he sucked.

So, yeah, the poll data might be accurate, but it doesn’t exist in a vaccuum.  When you look at the big picture, when all things are considered, maybe the real, bottom-line reason that some people, Democrats, blacks, whites, whatever, won’t vote for Obama for president is…(drumroll, please)…because he just plain sucks.
